ABSTRACT

Objective: To develop and validate a new simple, accurate, precise and sensitive high performance liquid chromatographic method (HPLC) method for simultaneous estimation of ubidecarenone and vitamin E acetate in capsule dosage form as per international conference on harmonization (ICH) guidelines. Methods: The chromatographic separation of drugs were achieved using hypersil C8 column (250 mm x 4.6 mm, 5µ) in isocratic elution mode with a mobile phase of methanol: ethanol: n-hexane (80:10:10 v/v/v) at a flow rate of 1 ml/min with ultra-violet (UV) detection at 210 nm. Results: The optimized method produced sharp peaks with good resolution, minimum tailing factor and satisfactory retention time were found to be 5.745 min and 12.565 min for vitamin E acetate and ubidecarenone respectively. The method was linear in the range of 60-180 µg/ml for ubidecarenone and 20-60 µg/ml for vitamin E acetate with a correlation coefficient of 0.999 and 0.9993 respectively. Mean recoveries observed for ubidecarenone and vitamin E acetate were 99.85% and 99.73% respectively. The percentage relative standard deviation (% RSD) of peak area for system precision, method precision, and intermediate precision were found to be less than 0.37%. The lower degree of % RSD obtained has proved that the method was precise and robust. Conclusion: A new simple HPLC method was developed and validated as per ICH guidelines for the simultaneous estimation of ubidecarenone and vitamin E acetate and the method can be effectively applied for the routine analysis of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and formulations.

ABSTRACT

Background: Oral cancer being one of the most common malignancies in the low-income group in India. It usually presents in an advanced stage limiting treatment options. The mainstays of treatment being surgery and radiotherapy both being lifestyle changing procedures. Aims and objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the quality of life for oral cancer survivors after surgery in comparison with radiotherapy using ICF questionnaire Materials and methods: Oral cancer patients who underwent surgery (25 patients) and Radiotherapy (25 patients) in Stanley medical college for stage 1 and stage 2 lesions of oral carcinoma for past 3 Years (2013-2015) were enrolled. Results: The study showed that surgery as primary therapy provided a better quality of life than radiotherapy alone in the treatment of oral cancer patients. Conclusion: After comparing the results primary surgery for oral malignancy seems to be the treatment of choice as long as the tumor is amenable to surgical resection. Radiotherapy though resulting in a lower quality of life is very efficacious for unresectable tumors.

ABSTRACT

The exopolysaccharides (EPS) producing ability was evaluated by nutritional defined media by the Frateuria aurentia was the highest yield EPS-producing strain, which was isolated from elephant dung in Srivilliputhur, Tamilnadu, India. It was identified as Frateuria aurentia with carbohydrate assimilation process and 16S rDNA gene sequencing. The favourable conditions for EPS yield by the microorganism growth in a chemically defined medium were tested with carbon, nitrogen, cultivation time, temperature, pH, hydrocarbon, surfactants, sodium chloride, metal ions and inoculums concentration in static and shaking conditions had the most significant influences. Among the various nutritional sources of interactive effects the maximum EPS production was recorded at pH 7.00 (1.431 ± 0.0096 OD); 30 C (1.661 ± 0.028 OD); Jaggery (1.185 ± 0.003 OD); ⁰ Tryptone (1.248 ± 0.011 OD); Ferric chloride (1.682 ± 0.022 OD); Glutamine (2.136 ± 0.067 OD); polyethyleneglycol (0.873 ± 0.041 OD); 2.5% NaCl (1.138 ± 0.023 OD); Neem oil (1.699 ± 0.176 OD); inoculum concentration 2.00% (1.625 ± 0.007 OD); The maximum EPS production was viewed at the 72hrs of incubation at static condition (1.58 ± 0.122 OD).

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Although previously thought to remit largely in adolescence, a growing literature supports the persistence of the disorder and/or associated impairment into adulthood. Studies in India are lacking on ADMD. Aims and Objectives: To compare the phenomenology of ADHD in childhood, adolescence and adulthood, to compare the psychiatric co-morbidities with ADHD in childhood, adolescence and adulthood, to compare the global functioning of subjects with ADHD in childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Methods: A statistical comparison was made between studies done in dept. of psychiatry, CSMMU UP, Lucknow on childhood, adolescent and adult ADHD for its various aspects. Conclusions: Hyperactivity-impulsivity decreases as subjects with ADHD grow up and inattention symptoms become more impairing, ADHD is highly co-morbid across all age groups but the nature of co-morbidities change, functioning of subjects with ADHD improve as they grow older.

ABSTRACT

There are few comparative studies conducted with glucosamine [GlcN1 (glucosamine sulfate with potassium chloride), GlcN2 (glucosamine sulfate plus chondroitin sulfate) along with ChoN3 (chondroitin sulfate alone)] in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. In this study the treated groups were studied for alleviation of pain and joint stiffness with correlation of measurement of urinary pyridinium cross links such as pyridinoline (Pyr) and deoxypyridinoline (Dpyr). Hence, this study was eventually planned to evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of glucosamine with chondroitin sulfate treated groups. Urinary pyridinium crosslinks such as Pyr and Dpyr measurement are used to monitor the clinical status as well as bone turnover of OA patients. These two collagen crosslinks measured in urine, which provides information both on the pathogenesis of OA as well as the rate of bone turnover. The results of this study suggest that GlcN2 and ChoN3 can relieve pain, improving functional ability and joint mobility so as to enhance the quality of life for osteoarthritis patients.

ABSTRACT

The present study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of a methanol extract of Bauhinia racemosa (MEBR) (Caesalpiniaceae) stem bark in various systems. 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical, superoxide anion radical, nitric oxide radical, and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays were carried out to evaluate the antioxidant potential of the extract. The antioxidant activity of the methanol extract increased in a concentration-dependent manner. About 50, 100, 250, and 500 æg MEBR inhibited the peroxidation of a linoleic acid emulsion by 62.43, 67.21, 71.04, and 76.83 percent, respectively. Similarly, the effect of MEBR on reducing power increased in a concentration-dependent manner. In DPPH radical scavenging assays the IC50 value of the extract was 152.29 æg/ml. MEBR inhibited the nitric oxide radicals generated from sodium nitroprusside with an IC50 of 78.34 æg/ml, as opposed to 20.4 æg/ml for curcumin. Moreover, MEBR scavenged the superoxide generated by the PMS/NADH-NBT system. MEBR also inhibited the hydroxyl radical generated by Fenton's reaction, with an IC50 value of more than 1000 æg/ml, as compared to 5 æg/ml for catechin. The amounts of total phenolic compounds were also determined and 64.7 æg pyrocatechol phenol equivalents were detected in MEBR (1 mg). The antimicrobial activities of MEBR were determined by disc diffusion with five Gram-positive, four Gram-negative and four fungal species. MEBR showed broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against all tested microorganisms. The results obtained in the present study indicate that MEBR can be a potential source of natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agents.
